A BIT OF HISTORY & NOSTALGIA

If the walls of the Criterion could talk, they would have many stories to tell. Over the years, the building has housed various shops, apartments, and even a theatre.

Originally built in 1923, the building stands as a significant version of Classical Revival architecture. At the time, the lavish interior decor of the theater emulated the famous movie houses of Los Angeles.

In 1932, Shirley Temple and Will Rogers performed at the Criterion to raise money for unemployed citizens suffering in the Great Depression.

From 1924 to 2013, the building was home to Criterion Theatres through a number of different renovations and theater chains.
